19-Year-Old Open Source MMORPG Eternal Lands Gets A Major Update After Two Years
After nearly two decades in operation, open source fantasy MMORPG Eternal Lands is still very much alive and kicking and has just received a massive update. Update 1.9.6 features a long list of new content and improvements to both the frontend and backend parts of the game.
On the frontend, Update 1.9.6 adds several new areas, including a “semi-secret” map for new players called Newbie Dream Temple, a new island, a market area for bots, and a small, non-PK cave near the Zirak exit. Most existing areas have also been updated, improved, or tweaked in some for or another. Over 90 new item images have also been added to differentiate used, second-hand, damaged, and rare weapons and armor.
Over on the backend, the update introduces new network code to allow encrypted connections, a command to search for command names and descriptions, improved URL parsing, and various code cleanups and bug fixes.
The full patch notes can be found on the Eternal Lands official forums.
