Amazon Announces Another Lord Of The Rings MMO In Partnership With Embracer

that Lord of the Rings MMO that Amazon Game Studios cancelled back in 2021? Well, the game is now back on the drawing table as the studio partners with Embracer Group to finally get it done.

Embracer Group is known around these parts as the company that bought out acquired Middle-Earth Enterprises last year. The company now owns the worldwide rights to all of Tolkien’s works including all Lord of the Rings motion pictures, stage productions, theme parks, board games, and video games.

Surprisingly, Standing Stone Games has managed to retain ownership of Lord of the Rings Online following the buyout with no licensing issues whatsoever.

As for Amazon, the company also cut themselves a piece of the Lord of the Rings pie by way of the Rings of Power TV series on Amazon Prime. The studio was also working together with Chinese video game studios Tencent and Leyou on a new Lord of the Rings MMORPG which ended up getting scrapped, presumably due to a failed business deal.

Both Amazon and Embracer are now reviving the Lord of the Rings project, which will thankfully still be an MMO, as revealed in the official press release:

“The game will be an open-world MMO adventure in a persistent world set in Middle-earth, featuring the beloved stories of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings literary trilogy,” announced Amazon. “The game is in early stages of production, with Amazon Games Orange County—makers of the popular open-world MMO game New World—leading development.”

“Amazon Games will publish the game globally for PC and consoles,” the studio added. “Additional details, including launch timing, will be shared at a later date.”
