Overview

Pathfinder Online Overview

Pathfinder Online is sandbox MMORPG developed by Goblinworks based on the Pathfinder franchise. The game divergences from the cookie cutter generic MMORPG by having no set classes, a completely player driven economy, no unnecessary grinding, player housing, and open world PvP. The game accomplishs the "no grinding" promise by implementing steady XP gain for players whether they're online or offline, similar to how skill gain in Eve Online works. This means both casual and hardcore players will progress at the same rate, regardless of how much time they sink into the game.

Much like Camelot Unchained, Pathfinder Online was funded by crowdfunding.

Development History / Background:

Pathfinder Online was developed by the Goblinworks powered by the Unity engine. The game raised slightly over $1 million through Kickstarter and aims to deliver a unique sandbox MMORPG experience. The game's name and setting is based on the tabletop Pathfinders game and the developer has an exclusive partnership with Paizo Publishing, the owner of the Pathfinder IP. The company launched their Kickstarter campaign in January, 2013 and set out to release a full game within 5 years. Early Enrollment began on December 31, 2014, allowing anyone who had backed the game on Kickstarter at a tier that included Early Enrollment or purchased an Early Enrollment package since to play.

With the release of Early Enrollment v9, Goblinworks dropped the initial box fee and allowed anyone to begin playing by simply paying a subscription fee. The company also introduced a 15-day free trial at this time.

In September 2015, it was announced that Goblinworks had suffering financial issues and that all but three of the company's staff had been laid off. At that time, Paizo CEO Lisa Stevens took over as Acting CEO.

Between September 2015 and March 2017, the game remained fairly stagnant. A few patches were released, but the game ultimately did not change much. Throughout this time, there continued to be intermittent notes from Goblinworks Acting CEO Lisa Stevens that the team was looking for someone else to take over development of the game.

On March 17, 2017, Stevens announced that the team had outlined a one-year timeline for completion of the game. The now three-person team is currently working to finish the game within the announced timeline.

On December 16, 2019 Pathfinder Online launched into Open Enrollment which allows players to subscribe at a rate of $5 per month per character. It was announced that the development team is now down to two people.

On July 27, 2021 it was announced that Pathfinder Online would shut down on November 28, 2021 following a special event that culminated with the end of the world.
