Final Fantasy XIV TV Adaptation Is ‘Dead’ Confirms Production Company Hivemind

Final Fantasy XIV fans eagerly awaiting its live-action TV adaptation will be disappointed to know that the project has officially been cancelled. The FFXIV TV series was first announced in June 2019 by Sony Pictures and Hivemind, the production company behind Netflix’s The Witcher and Amazon’s The Expanse.

Apparently, the project was too big of an undertaking and was immediately scrapped by showrunners upon reading the script. “We took around a fantastic pilot script […] with a multi-season plan they built with our show runners but got rejected across the board,” Hivemind co-founder Dinesh Shamdasani tweeted. “The size and scale needed to do it right proved too much for anyone to want to risk. Amazon came closest.”

Jake Thornton, one of the cancelled show’s scriptwriters, also revealed on X that the COVID-19 pandemic heavily influenced the showrunners’ decision. “It was a real result of Covid, unfortunately. We took It out just as studios began to zip up their purse strings,” he tweeted.

Hopefully, they’ll loosen their purse strings a bit further down the road. In a somewhat related note, if you’re a sci-fi fan, you should definitely check out EVE Online vibes.
