Monster Energy Goes After Capcom And Pokémon For Alleged Trademark Infringement

Monster Energy is currently in a trademark trolling crusade with the energy drink company filing over a hundred complaints in Japan last week against brands and companies that used the word “monster” in any way, shape, and form. They even went after Capcom for Monster Hunter and The Pokémon Company for the use of Pocket Monster.

The complaints against both companies were summarily dismissed by the authorities (as they should be), although it’s unclear whether the other Japanese companies were favored with the same ruling.

Monster Energy has had a reputation for going after companies, video game studios included, for alleged trademark violations and tying them up in lengthy and very costly litigation. The company argues that the use of the word “monster” by other companies for various products and brands could be confusing to customers, an argument that has been constantly shot down time and time again.

Prior to filing their complaints in Japan, Monster Energy also filed a complaint against indie developer Glowstick Entertainment for using the words monster, beast, and unleashed, as well as the use of claw-like assets, fonts, and even the colors green, black, and white in their multiplayer horror game Dark Deception: Monsters and Mortals.
