Old School RuneScape Dives Into New Zones, Returning Quests, And Sailing Skill

Another RuneScape for spring and summer 2024. Some of the highlights of the classic MMORPG’s biggest developer stream of the year include the return of old quests, updates to the starting zone, a brand-new zone, sailing, and multiple in-game events throughout the first half of the year.

Fresh off the production line is Scurrius, the Rat King, a mid-level boss encounter in the Varrock Sewers that’s designed to ease new players into the art of boss fighting. The royal rodent is set to arrive on January 24 along with three new weapons, a new pet, and another round of combat XP adjustments.

Early spring will see the return of classic Mahjarrat quests While Guthix Sleeps and Defender of Varrok all the way back from 2008. The former has been enhanced to bring it in line with future story arcs, while the latter will remain largely the same with a little “Old School spice” thrown into the mix.

The latter half of the season will see updates to the Wilderness starting zone that will transform the Chaos Temple into a PvP hotspot for low-level players. Undead pirates have also descended on the temple, turning it into a free-for-all battlefield between the living dead, the temple’s annoying elder druids, and players looking to make some coin off of the temple’s new unique drops.

Jagex will also be opening the borders to the new Varlamore area in March along with the first part of its questline. The new region will feature several points-of-interest, including underground zones, the Fortis Colloseum, and the Hunters Guild, as well as a new mini-game called Perilous Moons. More Varlamore zones, activities, and quests, are set to arrive in the tail end of summer.

Players can also look forward to the return of several regularly scheduled events, including this summer bigger and better Dean mode, and the official HD Mode for the 11-year-old free-to-play MMORPG.

Finally, one of the big reveals during the livestream was the sailing skil, which will also come with new island zones and points-of-interest, that’s now in the early stages of development. There’s no release date for the new feature yet but the developers have broken down its development journey into four phases with an alpha test and two beta tests planned ahead of its release.
