Prior to today, the plan was to make Path of Exile 2 a major overhaul/expansion for the original Path of Exile. Going forward it looks like Grinding Gear Games will maintain and update both games. The logic for making Path of Exile 2 a separate game comes from game director Jonathan Rogers who said we "would essentially be getting rid of a game people love for no real reason", as Path of Exile 2 will be quite a bit different from the original game.
