Amazon Lays Off Another 9,000 Employees Across Various Divisions Including Twitch

Amazon has laid off another 9,000 workers, including 400 Twitch employees, in addition to the 18,000 that the company let go earlier this year. The news comes just a few days after Twitch CEO Emmet Shear resigned from his post after 16 years to reportedly spend more time with his family, whether the layoffs and his resignation are connected is anyone’s guess.

The unfortunate news comes from Twitch’s new CEO Dan Clancy who cited the current economic problems as the reason for the layoffs. “As a company focused on building community together, this decision was incredibly difficult and one we did not make without considerable thought,” he wrote. “Like many companies, our business has been impacted by the current macroeconomic environment, and and revenue growth has not kept pace with our expectations. In order to run our business sustainably, we’ve made the very difficult decision to shrink the size of our workforce.”

The Twitch management has refused to comment further on the recent layoffs and the remaining number of people employed by the company, but we do know that it wasn’t the only one affected. Amazon’s recent downsizing efforts have reportedly affected various subsidiaries and departments, including its Web Services division, advertising, and even human resources.

Our sympathies go out to all affected employees.
