Blizzard Confirms Cataclysm Classic Will Be Replacing Wrath of the Lich King Classic Servers

Aside from the Worldsoul Saga announcement, one of the other big pieces of news from BlizzCon 2023 this weekend is the launch of the Cataclysm expansion on the Cataclysm Classic when it launches in the first half of 2024.

In a follow-up Q&A session, Blizzard confirmed that the Wrath Classic servers will be completely replaced by Cataclysm when it goes live. The studio also revealed that Cataclysm won’t include the Looking for Raid (LFR) feature but that they’ll be adding Titan Rune dungeons instead. Although, there’s always the possibility that they’ll add the feature further down the line like what they did with Wrath Classic’s LFG tool.

Another hot topic is the Season of Discovery server. During the Q&A session, Blizzard revealed that levels will be capped at 25 for the first phase of the seasonal server and that each season can last from anywhere between one to three months. It will also feature more powerful mobs to for the faster progression pace.

“At the end of the day, we want players to feel more powerful with the Runes. That is the selling point of Season of Discovery,” Blizzard said. “It’s something new, it’s something special. There should be something that makes you feel more powerful. There might be some tuning changes to the outdoor world.”

The developers are still deciding on what to do with seasonal characters once a season ends but they assured the community that their characters won’t be deleted. Whether they’ll get to keep the runes that they collect throughout the season is still up in the air.

There’s also the possibility of a Season of Discovery server being opened for World of Warcraft Classic but a hardcore server is definitely off the table, at least for the time being.
