RuneScape Plans To Reduce Penalties For Dying To Encourage More Boss Battles
Earlier this year, RuneScape called Frank’s Free Deaths that effectively removed all penalties from dying in specific boss battles. This whipped up the playerbase into a boss-killing spree that resulted in over 6.5 million bosses killed for the entirety of the event. Apparently, that event was designed to gather which the studio will be using to rework the 21-year-old MMORPG’s death system.
“Going forward, we want to rework the Death System to ensure that it’s simpler and easier to understand, while reducing the penalty for dying within RuneScape,” said Jagex. “Our ultimate aim is to improve gameplay and quality of life for everyone, but we also want to ensure that any changes we make are either neutral or actively positive for RuneScape’s economy.”
The aim of the death system rework is to ensure that players understand what the exact penalties for dying are and encourage more players to try PvM content or finally take on especially challenging bosses. Reducing death penalties, however, will also undoubtedly have a significant effect on the in-game economy with less gold being lost from dying and equipment repairs. The team hopes to offset this through some other means.
The rework is presumably still in its early stages and a release date for the new system has yet to be set. In the meantime, you can check out the video below for more details on what the developers have planned.
