Blizzard Is Determined To Keep The Next World Of Warcraft Update Tightly Under Wraps

Throughout the studio’s long history, Blizzard Entertainment hasn’t exactly been known for keeping secrets, particularly when it comes to major releases. The running joke is that the studio is leakier than a sieve, not that anyone’s complaining.

The team, however, is shaking things up by keeping the next World of Warcraft update tightly under wraps. Executive producer Holly Longdale says the secrecy surrounding the update is part of their new approach to bringing new experiences to fans by trying new things and taking risks.

She its that it’s a risky experiment and that it might get “a bit bumpy,” but will hopefully pay off in the end. “For the 10.2.6 patch for Dragonflight, we created what we think is a unique event inspired by past musings from the community,” she teased. “We can say that it is open to anyone with a WoW subscription if they want to participate. That’s all we’re going say. Sorry, not sorry? Our goal is to continue to keep it secret— and keep it safe.”

Unfortunately for data miners, that means that the update won’t be making it to the public test server ahead of its release in March. That’s basically everything we know about the update at this point. There also won’t be trailers or teasers to herald its release, which, honestly, might be a better strategy to build up hype for the update. Whether the secretive new approach actually pays off still remains to be seen.
