Rift Adds $100 Mount Loot Boxes To Their Cash Shop
Last week Rift made headlines across the MMO press by allowing players to purchase best in slot gear via the cash shop, but their latest move has managed to attract the ire of the general gaming media. There is now a new loot box for sale which contains a random, tradable mount. The price for this mount-box? $100 USD.
Rift's latest move is just another example of the growing "macro" transaction trend. The new item caught the attention of players on the Rift subreddit. A post aptly titled "$100 mounts - has Trion gone insane? brought the story to our attention and it has also caught the attention of popular gaming commentator Jim Sterling who made a 5 minute video on the subject. Merely posting a link to Jim Sterling's video on the official Rift forums is enough to get s banned.
Rift was the first MMORPG by Trion Worlds and originally launched back in 2008 as a subscription based game. It went free to play in 2013 and while it was a well made game, it is certainly starting to show its age. The new $100 mount lootbox is only available for a limited time and contains one of about forty mounts. Be sure to grab yours before its too late!
EDIT: As of 12PM EST, Trion has removed the Orphiel's Mount Crate from the RIFT store. The full statement, made on the Rift forums is presented below:
The Orphiel's Mount Crate has been removed from the RIFT store - we listened to , met internally to discuss and decided to pull it.
There are a TON of other great things going on for Fae Yule though, and folks seem to be enjoying them. =)
I can't speak for all the game design requests in this thread, other than to say that RIFT Dev is constantly evaluating and reviewing projects. We're all working toward getting things wrapped up before the holiday break (Trion kindly gives us the days off between Christmas and New Year's), so I wouldn't expect a whole lot of new communication until January.
